Most outsourcing companies have a chief information officer. They have a number of other technology officers, production and engineering executives for the tech-medium company, or for some non-tech companies, infrastructure executives or technology executives who report to small tech executives. . An increasing number of companies have senior digital officers, and it is often necessary to have a single executive to oversee digital transformation efforts. There are examples of high-tech and digital chiefs with one or more of these topics. All three roles are rare for a combination of three different executives, needless to say, but very often the executives with these three titles are examples of companies that each report to the CEO. One of these companies is Johnson Controls.

Johnson Controlles is a 136-year-old Milwaukee-based company that builds products and services with an annual revenue of nearly $ 30 billion. Mike Ellis is the company’s chief customer and digital officer, which adds customer responsibility to the CDO title. He joined Johnson’s administration in October 2019. Diane Schwartz is the company’s chief information officer, who joined the company in August 2020. Finally, Vijay Sankaran is the company’s technology officer, and joined the company in May 2021.

Ellis describes her role as a key customer and digital officer, identifying the impact of the company’s efforts on customers and making them aware of what is most important to them. The goal is to identify and create ideas that will make a difference in their work. In addition, CMO reports that Ellis is responsible for digital product creation and enterprise marketing.

Schwarz has been a CIO for a long time in companies such as Hunt Consolidated and Textron. She has references to traditional CIO infrastructure, applications and websites. She also has a customer experience, including “how our employees work with all of our applications, how they get on with their day-to-day work”. Schwartz added, “Mike is the customer’s experience with our products, but when you have a Vine Diagram stack, how customers get tickets from portal, billing and field service, that’s where the CIO returns. It is not black and white to say that everything the client communicates with Johnson’s supervisors is under a microscope. We need to really explore the product experience and the app experience.

Sankara was previously a CIO at TD Ameritrade, which ran a creative program for the company. Controls production for Johnson controls. “When we think about a product, the game is changing what’s going on in our industry right now – part of that software,” he said. ”[We work on building] Build the right thing and the right thing. My focus is on building everything right and building a world-class digital software engineering company under Johnson Controls. Their team’s focus is on Open Blue software and data platform (IoT). Johnson Control is a platform that allows customers to drive energy efficiency and sustainability by implementing their rooms, modern buildings and artificial intelligence. [AI] And machine learning [ML] Being able to generate those insights. This creates a closed loophole for us to fully access smart buildings.

To support that, we are building the software and all the links and data structures and AI models in my new organization and we are working closely with Mike on customer needs and experiences and with Dian’s organization to support seamless integration of the overlapping parts of that Vine diagram. And infrastructure and cyber security, ”Sankara said.

To bring this to life, the team that submitted the report to Sankara was partially reporting to Ellis, who realized the importance of combining edge software engineering capabilities with an integrated blue platform. This has proven to be a strategic difference for the company. He accelerated Ellis’ vision by implementing a balanced framework within the group to accelerate Sankara’s speed into the market.

Schwartz pointed out that the key to deciding where one’s responsibility begins and where the next end will begin is in a formal and formal relationship. “We fully understand that we have to work hard to know the clues and to be clear to our teams,” Schwarz said. ”[We are] A company is undergoing a major transformation to its core digital. The problems we are facing are new to the organization.

Asked about the standard structures set up to build strong connections within the company, Schwarz cited the example of cyber security. There is an enterprise cyber security team that reports to her and a product cyber security team that reports to Sankara. Although there are some overlaps between what they do, they are different subjects. Schwarz and her company Chief Information Officer (CISO) will participate in Sankaran’s cyber security statements, as well as Sankaran and his CISO Schwarz Enterprise cyber security statements. This is especially true in areas where roles play a role.

Ellis Johnson’s management notes that these roles and responsibilities have enabled the 136-year-old to move from industry speed to software company speed. The company has three leaders who report to the company’s chief executive about its digital future commitment. Representing that level of digital complexity at the executive level will help the company achieve its goal of becoming digital.
